Thanks for reading Tim. You’re absolutely right. The cold does represent so many things. And your ability to face and overcome it represents so much more. HAMMER AWAY!
Awesome post Jack! I love the way you describe the day's journey, km by km. Such a useful metaphorical tour of our thoughts attempted tyranny. The body is truly the gatekeeper if we want to work with the mind. If you can't handle being out in the actual cold how in the world are you going to brave the elements of the untamed mind and have the fortitude to push through its wilderness and find true shelter? Congrats on the fruits of your consistent and repeated efforts. It truly something to celebrate and a pleasure to hear you share.
Thanks so much Rick! You put that so beautifully. I have the same thought process when it comes to cold showers: if I cannot handle some cold water how will I be able to handle struggle, discomfort, challenge, and tragedy in life? Voluntary hard things prepare us for involuntary hard things.
Trying to celebrate wins more than just brush over them and move onto the next thing. Thanks for helping me celebrate them :)
"And staying in the game, being consistent, is the most important variable to long-term success. The most rewarding things in life — exercise, relationships, and meaningful work — are all long-term games."
Thanks for your readership and support, James. I appreciate you letting me know what stuck out! I'm sure you can relate to running in the cold. Merry belated Christmas and Happy New Year to you and the family :)
Ironically I’m hammering away this morning, working on the essay you gave me fabulous feedback on last month. It needed an overhaul and I hope to finish soon. Hammering. Hammering.
at 75 i love to read these articles so i can say to my wife that there are people even crazier than me. i do admire your crazy flings. i/we hope to do the grand canyon this year rim-to-rim-to-rim maybe for the last time, but i remember one trip where one of hikers was in his early 80s.
Haha that made me smile! Thanks so much Gary. If you do the Grand Canyon, please send me some pics and tell me how it was! From what I know about you, you’re absolutely ready to take on the challenge.
I felt this. That cold weather represents so many things. Needed that message to strap on the shoes and get to WORK.

“Voluntary hard things prepare us for involuntary hard things” 🙌
Wins that describe the struggle on the way are so inspiring to hear about. Hope you share more like this in the future.
You’ll like Sunday’s newsletter then! Rounding up The Best of 2023. Similarly I love to hear about the wins of others.
Jack - wonderful story - perfect message.

That is so shiny :)
